BENGALURU: Escalating incidents of cyber syndicates using generative AI audio tools have prompted state cybercrime police and national security agencies to issue a detailed advisory warning citizens against sophisticated impersonation rackets.
The scam typically involves perpetrators scraping 3-to-5-second audio snippets of individuals from publicly accessible social media videos, reels, or voice messages. Using real-time AI speech synthesizers, fraudsters generate distress calls to parents or spouses, fabricating accidents or police detentions and demanding immediate online money transfers. Simultaneously, fraudsters continue to orchestrate "digital arrest" scams, falsely posing as federal investigative agencies over video calls to extort money.
Critical Safety Advisory for Citizens:
The Golden Pause: Never transfer money immediately under duress. Hang up and dial the relative directly on their standard phone number.
Establish a Family Safe-Word: Keep a private, offline code phrase known only to close family members to verify authentic emergency calls.
Immediate Reporting: Report fraudulent financial transactions immediately to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or call the dedicated helpline number 1930 within the first hour (the "Golden Hour") to freeze transferred sums.
