NEW DELHI / BENGALURU: Commemorated globally on September 25, World Pharmacists Day 2026 put the spotlight on the evolving responsibilities of pharmacy professionals under the official theme: "Empowering pharmacists for healthier futures."
Across India, the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) marked the occasion by linking the global theme with the national health mission: "Swastha Bharat: Combating Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)." Medical seminars, hospital workshops, and academic symposiums stressed the urgency of checking the over-the-counter misuse of antibiotics, which continues to pose a grave public health challenge.
Beyond fulfilling prescriptions, modern community and clinical pharmacists are increasingly recognized as primary healthcare partners. Their responsibilities have expanded to include monitoring drug-drug interactions, advising chronic patients on therapy adherence for hypertension and diabetes, and delivering patient-level pharmacovigilance.
Industry leaders called for broader institutional backing, ongoing professional upskilling, and the adoption of secure digital health registries to integrate community pharmacists into universal primary care networks.
